One of the significant benefits of membership to NAIOP is to have a collective voice representing the commercial real estate industry when addressing national, regional and local issues that impact economic development and/or the commercial real estate industry. Nationally we have an office in Washington D.C. staffed with lobbyists and professionals that regularly meet with our Senators and House members regarding such issues.
NAIOP National Priority Issues-2016
Tax Reform – The goals of reform include simplification of the tax code, increasing the global competitiveness of American businesses, and promoting economic growth. Many in Congress also believe that tax reform should address increasing income inequality and raise revenue for additional government spending and investment.
Energy Efficiency – Energy efficiency is one of the most controllable operating costs for commercial buildings. It makes both economic and social sense to employ strategies to reduce a building’s total energy usage. However, arbitrary mandates oftentimes are based on assumptions that have little to do with realistic capabilities and business realities.
NAIOP Wisconsin Legislative Affairs
Locally the NAIOP Wisconsin has a Public Affairs Committee Co-chaired by Deborah Tomczyk of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren and Jeff Whipple of Interstate Partners to follow issues. They are supported by a committee of members knowledgeable on particular issues. In February 2011 the Board of Directors also made the decision to retain a lobbyist, Tom Larson, to represent us in Madison. The Public Affairs Committee meets monthly for legislative updates, general business of the chapter and guest speakers. Information regarding the committee can be found on the Committees page of the website.
NAIOP Direct Giver Conduit Program*
The Direct Giver Program serves as a personal donation “checking account” for individual members. The account is established and remains under your name. The REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) trustees and staff keeps records and make recommendations for political contribution from your account, however, you have the final decision on any disbursements from your account. Contributions to federal, state and local candidates are distributed via a Direct Giver check. Each contribution is individually listed with an accompanying cover letter to the candidate’s campaign. A contribution check may be sent directly to a candidate for your convenience, or to you personally to deliver it to the candidate(s) you have chosen.
The advantage is both you and NAIOP Wisconsin are recognized for your contribution. It’s like getting twice the bang for your buck!
Using Your Direct Giver Campaign Account is Easy!
1. Make your check payable to Direct Giver – NOTE, credit cards ARE also accepted.
2. Return your contribution to the NAIOP office by mail, fax or email.
3. Your contribution is deposited into your direct giver account. It is held here until disbursement instructions are received from you.
4. Contact JIM VILLA at NAIOP (414-622-0006) to indicate which candidate(s) you wish to disburse the money.
5. A check will be written and either sent to the candidate(s) of your choice or to you for personal delivery.
