Our third annual mentoring program kicked off in January with 24 new participants. Please enjoy our first update of 2014.
Pat Lawton, Bank Mutual, Mentor
Though John and I have been getting together for only a couple of months the time has been fun and beneficial for me in a number of ways. John’s background and work in engineering and construction is a part of the real estate industry that I am not as familiar and involved with as the financial and development side so it has been great to get his perspective and insight on these matters. Additionally, since he is younger and newer to the industry he has a different network and view of things which is refreshing and different than the typical conversations of a real estate lender.
John Kastner, R.A. Smith National, Mentee
I signed up for the NAIOP mentoring program to move outside my comfort zone of engineering and look at real estate development from a new perspective. I recognize the value in going outside of my comfort zone to grow as a professional and as a person. The mentorship program will really allow me to use the insights of a mentor to help foster my desire to expand my experiences and overall knowledge of the real estate market. My mentor, Pat, has been a great motivator. He is very supportive in what I’m trying to accomplish in my career and has the philosophy that there are many roads to happiness and success. Our conversations have revolved around business topics such as market conditions, current professional projects and career progression, as well as personal relationships and outside work hobbies. I believe that a life balance in and out of work is required to be a productive person. Pat seems to have the same notion. I know I will take away a valuable experience from this program, and I hope he will be able to say the same.
