Our 4th Annual Mentoring Program kicked off in January with 24 participants. Thank you to Associated Bank for generously sponsoring this worthwhile program that allows our Developing Leaders and students to partner with leaders in our industry. Please enjoy our first update of 2015.
Kevin Armstrong, CBRE, Inc – Mentor
I was paired with Patrick Savoie a broker with JLL a competing firm. I was initially concerned this would hinder our ability to develop a mentor/mentee relationship. On day one Patrick and I discussed ground rules for our relationship and topics that we would stay away from. After three meetings it is apparent that despite the restriction on topics we discuss there is no restriction on the relationship we are developing. Patrick and I have discussed a wide range of topics from the joys and challenges of starting out in the business to it is never too early to start planning for retirement. Patrick – don’t forget to take advantage of the company match! The saying “the more things change the more they stay the same” is evident in real estate brokerage as Patrick and I have had many similar experiences. The only real difference is the 25 years separating when we entered the business. I have been able to share with Patrick how I dealt with similar situations and the results of the action. I am hopeful Patrick is able to take away bits of information or ideas from our discussions and use them in his personal and professional development. Patrick has shared how he views the industry and his role as a broker in it. I thoroughly enjoy the interaction and look forward to continued conversations with Patrick.
Patrick Savoie, JLL, Mentee
I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to learn from Kevin Armstrong of CBRE as my mentor. Although our mentor/mentee relationship has only been for a month and a half, I have learned a lot from Kevin on a professional and personal level. Kevin, who is a seasoned veteran as a commercial real estate broker and now Managing Director of CBRE, has provided extremely beneficial advice and feedback that I will carry with me for the rest of my career. Not only has Kevin provided advice on how to build a successful foundation as a young broker, he has also shared insight on how to transform that beginning foundation into a long term, successful career. I am excited to continue the NAIOP Mentorship Program and to further develop the mentor/mentee relationship.
