Briefly tell us what you do: I am the founder of a privately held commercial real estate enterprise. We acquire and develop, own, and operate institutional quality commercial real estate assets on behalf of our private investors. In that regard, we have a number of different investment strategies that we pursue across various property types and markets. We are long-term investors with an indefinite holding period for most properties we target. We also provide a wide variety of service solutions to commercial real estate investors, including due diligence, asset management, consulting, sales, leasing and capital markets brokering.
Which project do you love the most or are most proud of? Looking back, I would say that I learned the most from my very first transaction as an investment officer for Northwestern Mutual. I moved to San Francisco just following the dot.com bust in early 2001. I had to learn how to navigate a tough economy and build a book of business while also learning the ropes around the market itself. It was a valuable experience.
Most recently, I am quite proud of the progress we are making in building and growing Black Cap Halcyon. It is a high energy, entrepreneurial entity that reflects the values of myself, our investors, and our team. In this company, we are building a value proposition and a culture we can be proud of for the long haul. With that in mind, we are always looking for strategic partners and investors with intellectual curiosity and a desire to engage, provide perspective, and grow.
Do you have a favorite author or quote? My favorite author is E.M Forster. He is a great story-teller. Also, I think much of his basic themes are timeless. My favorite quote is from Carl Jung. I will paraphrase a bit: “when insights rule over differences, all the pairs of opposites come together”. I think that is a good approach to problem-solving, and to life in general.
What is your favorite restaurant? Locally, its Lake Park Bistro, although pretty much anything done by Bartollotta is going to be good.
Tell us something most people don’t know about you? I am a curious person. I like to explore and try new things. I tend to approach decision making with equal parts logical analysis and intuition. I am spiritual. I have a strong sense of faith.
What are your hobbies outside of work? I have four little ones at home so much of my time revolves around the family. I love the game of baseball. I coach my son’s little league teams and love to watch the kids play the game. And, while I cannot play hockey, I manage my son’s hockey team and enjoy watching those as well. I have two girls in ballet that I also enjoy watching perform.
IPhone, Blackberry or Android phone? iPhone. I was a hold-out for a time but definitely a convert.
